Of all things on TV right now, there is only one true winner for your viewing needs. And that winner is, Top Gear. Going into it’s 14th season, the show is an odd mix of car reviews, car challenges, and car races all hosted by three insane British men, who act like children. Released on BBC, the show aims to entertain. And it does… very, very well. And how does it do this you ask? Well, I’ll give you my top ten reasons.
10. Every episode they have a segment called, Star in a Reasonably Priced Car. In the segment, they have a star go around their test track in, at first a Suzuki Liana but now a Chevrolet Lacetti, as fast as possible. Guests include Jay Leno, Tom Jones, and even Sienna Miller.
9. The Gadgets- Randomly, they’ll sometimes test out gadgets that come along with cars, or that are meant to go into cars. This usually leads to one of three things. Hilarity as the hosts struggle to work the strange creation. Amazement at what mankind is capable of producing. Or befuddlement at why somebody would ever put time and money into such a inane and pointless thing. All three possibilities are completely entertaining.
8. Being made by the BBC means one very important thing. Complete third party objectivity. Because the money for the show doesn’t come from sponsors, Top Gear can do and say what they please about whatever. This allows Hammond, Mays, and Clarkson free rein to be as honest as they want with whatever they please.
7. The show has quite possibly, one of the best editing crews in the business. I know editing isn’t something a lot of people look for, but I assure you, in this show, it stands out and is an element all on its own. The way each show is filmed, each review is cut, each joke set up is an art unto it’s own. Truly amazing.
6. Constantly while watching the series, you are surprised by the score. Music is pulled from movies, other tv shows, and some of the most random music genre that it is fairly mind blowing. And it always fits. Never do they randomly pick a song because it’s popular. The music always fits the scene. And it’s amazing. Plus, they have a top ten driving songs. Check it out.
5. One of the best parts of the show is when the the hosts are given challenges by the shows producers. Usually this includes being given some money, having to buy some sort of car, and then do ridiculous things with it. My favorite is when they buy two wheel drive cars from before the 1980’s, and then are asked to drive through the bush of Africa. Hilarity ensues
4. These guys have racked up some serious air miles…and even more in road trips. They travel all across the world. Japan, the U.S., Romania, the North Pole. Nothing is off limits to these guys. And with their film crew, you are assured the most amazing shots of every place.
3. In many episodes, there will be some sort of race, whether it be whether it’s faster to drive or fly to Switzerland from England, or what’s faster, Japanese trains or a hyped up Japanese car. And it’s not just an interesting idea, as always, it’s hilarious and over the top, yet incredibly informative. Clarkson, Hammond and Mays some how manage to get across a ton of information about the vehicles they use in intriguing ways that makes you completely forget that you’re learning.
2. It’s a car show, first and for most. And they do not slack off. Amazing super cars, strange vehicles that look like Dr. Seuss took acid and started designing things, and even the most mundane cars. As much as this show is about fun and entertainment, the real stars have been and always will be the cars. I was never a huge fan before I started watching the shows, but now I’m addicted to cars, completely and utterly. And if you watch this show even a little, you will be too, hearing the growl of the engine even in your sleep.
1.There have been shows about cars before, but it’s the hosts that make this show amazing. Three of the funniest, immature, intelligent, and entertaining men on the planet. Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James Mays are the, hands down, coolest guys ever. Even the Stig manages to pull of the silent James Dean thing, without ever taking off the jumpsuit and helmet.
I cannot recommend this show enough. It’s one of the most popular and downloaded shows in the world, and there is a reason. It’s amazing.
Watch it. 10 Exploding Caravans out of 10.
